Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln

Silent movie grasp D.W. Griffith’s first talkie works as a companion piece to his traditional BIRTH OF A NATION, offering an in depth biographical sketch of the 16th president. We see his start in a log cabin, the tragic demise of his past love, Ann Rutledge (Una Merkel), his debates with Douglas, his accepting of the presidency, the horrible toll of the Civil Battle, and eventually the tragic assassination at Ford’s Theater. Griffith reveals his traditional meticulous consideration to interval element, and the framing of the varied vignettes has the texture of historic pictures come to life. Walter Huston is great within the title function, with a portrayal that subtly evolves from laconic, wizened rascal to noble elder statesman. It is a fascinating, worthy movie, and an fascinating historic doc in and of itself.
